Foreign policy is seemingly moving into uncharted territories and is being challenged by unknown risks and by a process that keeps turning valid certainties into uncertainties. At this year’s German Ambassadors’ Conference the German Foreign Minister Heiko MAAS described the current situation also by referring to the most recent book of the US political scientist Robert KAGAN, titled “The Jungle Grows Back” and drawing a scenario of a world of changing alliances in which the strongest dictate the rules.

How Germany and Japan, both proponents of a multilateral world order, should respond to this shift and what impact it has on security policy shall be discussed at a panel discussion organized by the Japanese-German Center Berlin (JDZB) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in cooperation with the Federal Foreign Office, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA).

This panel discussion “The ‘jungle growing back in the world order’ and the future of multilateralism – Challenges for Germany and Japan” will take place on Monday, 29 October 2018, from 6 pm to 7.30 pm at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Tiergartenstr. 35, 10785 Berlin

Panelists:
TSURUOKA Michito, Associate Professor, Keiō University, Tokyo
KIKUCHI Tsutomu, Professor, Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo
Ina LEPEL, Director General for Asia and the Pacific, Federal Foreign Office, Berlin
Hanns MAULL, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Berlin
