This non-governmental discussion forum of leading German and Japanese personalities from the fields of business, politics, science and the media exchanges views intensively on social, political and economic developments in the two countries and on bilateral issues as well as international challenges. In the face of global crises, it thus works towards even closer cooperation between the value partners Germany and Japan. Following the meetings, recommendations are drawn up in a joint declaration and reported to the heads of government of Japan and Germany.

The German-Japanese Forum is led by two co-chairs: Currently, these are Matthias NAß (Chief International Correspondent, DIE ZEIT) on the German side and KOBAYASHI Eizo (Director Emeritus, Itochu Corporation) on the Japanese side.
