Conference: Olympia 2020
Olympia 2020: The Importance of Major Sporting Events for Society, Politics and the Economy
The JDZB honors the postponed Olympic and Paralympic Games 2020 in Tōkyō with another conference on the Olympic year – this event has also been postponed from 2020 to 2021.
Olympic and Paralympic Games last on average 34 days – the preparations of the host city, however, take many years. Every major sporting event, especially the Olympic Games, has an impact on the cityscape, politics, society, economy and public discourse. In cooperation with the German Institute for Japanese Studies, this panel discussion will therefore examine and contrast the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tōkyō 2020 and other comparable major sporting events from a sociological and political science perspec-tive. The background for this conference is also the publication of the anthology “Japan Through the Lens of the Tōkyō Olympics Open Access” (palgrave 2020) edited by Barbara HOLTHUS, Isaac GAGNÉ, Wolfram MANZENREITER and Franz WALDENBERGER.
