The modernity of the Japanese house is proverbial. However, as much as anything else it is an invention of Bruno TAUT, who lived in Japan from 1933-36. The longing of western modernity for its origins was associated with the Japanese house. Unorthodoxly, it seems that TAUT placed the (residential) machine, Villa Katsura, and the Acropolis on an equal footing. In his search for the universality of modernity, TAUT had good reasons for doing so. These reasons will be examined in the presentation by Prof. GLEITER.

Prof. Jörg H. GLEITER is the Professor of Architectural Theory and Managing Director of the Institute of Architecture (IfA) of the Technical University Berlin. He has been a visiting professor in USA, Italy, Germany and 2003-05 at Waseda University. His publications include articles on Japanese Architecture, Architectural Theory and Philosophy, Ornament and Friedrich Nietzsche.
