Japan's Masterpieces of Wooden Architecture - Photographs by FUJITSUKA Mitsumasa

In the Rotes Rathaus

Until the end of the 19th century, architecture in Japan was almost exclusively wooden, from homes, temples and shrines to the palaces of the Imperial Family. Many excellent examples have survived to the present day.

In 2014, architectural historian Fujimori Terunobu and photographer Fujitsuka Mitsumasa set off together on a voyage of discovery, searching for special examples of wooden construction within Japan. Their findings were published in an impressive illustrated volume: “Japan’s Wooden Heritage, A Journey Through a Thousand Years of Architecture” (English-language edition, 2017). This exhibition came about on the basis of this book.

This photographic exhibition is now being shown in the Rotes Rathaus at the close of the jubilee year celebrating 160 years of German-Japanese friendship. Around 40 exhibits afford insight into the history and characteristics of Japanese wooden architecture. All images are by renowned photographer Fujitsuka Mitsumasa, who has worked with master architects such as Andō Tadao or Kuma Kengo. His body of work was recognized by a special prize at the prestigious “2017 Mainichi Design Award”.

A first version of the exhibition premiered in Germany in 2018/2019 in the Japanese-German Center Berlin in cooperation with the Japanese Cultural Institute Cologne (The Japan Foundation). Due to overwhelming popular demand, an extended version of the exhibition was produced in 2020, which is currently in the possession of the Japanese Cultural Institute. It is this exhibition that will now be shown in Berlin for the first time.
